ALEXA Mini Workflow

The well-known ALEXA or AMIRA workflow can be adapted 1:1 to ALEXA Mini. When recording QuickTime ProRes files, the camera creates clips in the wide gamut Log C color space or broadcast-ready clips in the Rec 709 color space that integrate seamlessly into industry workflows.

With the introduction of SUP 4.0 ALEXA Mini also offers an ARRIRAW recording mode. This enables the ALEXA Mini camera not only to record standard resolutions such as HD, 2K or UHD, but also features an Open Gate recording mode that uses the complete sensor area. Recording ARRIRAW to CFast 2.0 cards in the ALEXA Mini made it necessary to wrap the files in an MXF container. The new format is called MXF/ARRIRAW; internally it is the same ARRIRAW you already know from the ALEXA cameras.

In addition to in-camera ARRIRAW, further recording modes have been enabled to support specific formats end-to-end. For example the new HD Anamorphic mode is a ProRes mode that internally de-squeezes anamorphic images by a factor of 2.0 and scales them to HD 1920 x 1080 ProRes.

As a counterpart to the ready-to-deliver HD Ana. mode, there is a matching option on the MXF/ARRIRAW side: 16:9 HD Ana. (OG 3.4K) is an un-de-squeezed format with a pixel count of 1920 x 2160.

Please note:
We have issued a new ARRIRAW SDK (Version 5.3) for implementation by our industry partners, which enables ALEXA Mini and ALEXA SXT support. Keep in mind that our software cycle might not be in-sync with some of the tools available, so get in touch with your software supplier to make sure the latest ARRIRAW SDK has been implemented. If this is not the case, our ARRIRAW Converter will be able to help you out.
